for the majority of students, in-person instruction is critical to their education. Independent study is always completely optional. It is the parents’ or caregiver’s decision to enroll a student in Independent Study and they can always change their mind.

Once a parent or caregiver requests that a student to return to in-person school, the student must be re-enrolled in in-person schools within five days. A District can never require a student to attend Independent Study for behavioral or any other reasons.
