We are going through a challenging time for families and especially teens, who are sheltering in place away from friends and activities. It is a loss that they grieve. I found the best book to help kids from age 11 through adults about this topic, though centered on one aspect of loss. It is: When a Friend Dies: A Book for Teens about Grieving & Healing, Updated Third Edition, by Marilyn Gootman.
The book is a small paperback that easily fits in a purse or backpack. The format is conversational with questions and answers. The reader can find the question he has and be comforted by a short answer with actions to take. It makes you think about the loss and feelings that you have: pain, guilt, feeling nothing, or when will it end?
There are quotes from famous people that offer comfort. I especially like this one.
“Memories have to be our most painful blessing.” – Kanye West
