Support for Families of Children with Disabilities is currently engaged in a strategic planning process to set the direction and the priorities for the organization for the next 3 - 5 years.  Your input is crucial in helping us decide how best to use SFCDs resources in supporting you and in ensuring that SFCD is able to maximize the achievement of its mission of ensuring that families of children with any kind of disability or special health care need have the knowledge and assistance they need to make informed choices that support their child’s health, education, and development.

  What follows is a list of some of services that SFCD offers.

Phone Line:
Support for Families staff (parents themselves) can provide individualized information, referrals, and help over the phone. Phone Line Staff speak Cantonese, Spanish, English, and Mandarin.

Drop-In Center:
Support for Families staff (parents themselves) can provide individualized information, referrals, and help on site at the drop in center. On Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00-8:30 there is free drop-in child care while parents are on-site using the services of Support for Families.  Phone Line Staff speak Cantonese, Spanish, English, and Mandarin.

Resource Libraries:
Support for Families has a library with more than 3,000 books, videotapes, DVDs and toys which are available to families and professionals.

Support Groups:
Support groups help families find solutions to challenges, learn advocacy skills, explore resources, and gain strength by sharing experiences with peers.

Volunteer Parent Mentors:
Trained volunteer Parent Mentors can be matched with a family based on a shared culture, language, or disability issue.

Educational Workshops and Clinics:
Based on needs expressed by families, monthly parent/professional workshops and weekly small-group clinics help parents and professionals learn about resources, rights and responsibilities.

Information and Resource Conference:
An annual conference that brings together over 60 exhibitors, 18 workshops to assist families to better understand their child's disability, the systems that serve them, and services in the community.

Mental Health/Social Worker:
Social worker provides short term counseling and short term case management for families accessing mental health and other services for their children and or youth

Family Gatherings:
Quarterly events, such as an annual ice-skating party and Halloween party give families a chance to socialize and network in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Community Outreach:
Staff and volunteers make presentations and conduct training on disability issues and parent perspectives to university classes, community agencies, and professional groups.

Newsletter:
A quarterly Newsletter in English, Spanish, and Chinese offers articles of interest to families, professionals, and the community.

All Support for Families services are provided free of charge
to families and the professionals who work with them.

Website:
The Support for Families website (www.supportforfamilies.org) provides information on events and services at Support for Families and links to resources around the nation. A few highlights are: downloadable disability packets, online Resource Guide, Library Catalog, downloadable newsletters (with Spanish and Chinese editions) and much more.

Listserv:
Support for Families of Children with Disabilities listserv allows members to subscribe and unsubscribe to an electronic mailing list to receive the most up-to-date information related to families of children with disabilities.
